CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Scientific interest in GLP-1 drugs, used for weight loss and to control type-2 diabetes, is now expanding to several other health conditions. Studies on semaglutide and other drugs in the same class have indicated possible benefits in some heart, kidney, liver and sleep-related diseases. However, many of these uses are still at the research stage, and these medicines have not been approved for the treatment of every disease.

GLP-1 drugs mimic the effect of a hormone in the body that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. They can reduce appetite, slow the process of stomach emptying and help control blood sugar. For this reason, their use in the treatment of obesity and type-2 diabetes has grown rapidly.

Research is also focusing on the possibility of reducing the risk of complications linked to heart disease and kidney conditions. In addition, their potential benefits are being studied in conditions such as metabolic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea and osteoarthritis.

There has also been significant recent progress on the cardiovascular benefits of GLP-1-based medicines. In the United States, Mounjaro, or tirzepatide, has received approval for reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in adults with type-2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk.

However, experts say GLP-1 drugs should be used only on a doctor’s advice and under proper medical supervision. Their effect and safety have not yet been equally established for every possible disease. Therefore, taking them on one’s own merely for weight loss is not advisable.
