US technology company Google has announced that it will set up its first data center in the US state of Wyoming to meet the growing requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The company will invest about $17 billion, or nearly Rs 1.5 lakh crore, in the project. The investment is being made at a time when political and local opposition to the expansion of large data centers in the US is increasing.

Google’s project will be developed near the city of Cheyenne in Laramie County. For this, the company has partnered with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power and Related Digital. A 702-megawatt fuel cell unit is planned to supply energy for the project. Carbon capture and storage technology will be used in it. Bloom Energy will provide fuel cell equipment for this.

Plan to reduce water consumption

According to Google, the data center will be operated using air-cooling technology so that pressure on local water resources is reduced. The company has also said it will bear the full cost of its electricity and will also cover the cost of infrastructure required because of the project. The company expects the investment to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in property tax revenue and employment opportunities at the local level.

Opposition to data center expansion grows

In the US, concern has grown among local communities over the increasing demand for electricity and water for AI data centers. During recent midterm elections, several local referendums were held in support of controls and new restrictions on data centers. Technology companies fear that political opposition and stricter rules could slow the pace of future projects.

Despite this, Google has decided on a major investment in Wyoming. The company aims to expand its computing capacity in line with rising demand for AI services and digital infrastructure.
