CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Amid rising cases of online fraud and fake phone calls, Google is working to strengthen its security features. The company’s phone and messaging safety systems are aimed at identifying suspicious calls, fake messages and possible fraud, and warning users in time. With the help of these features, people may get an opportunity to remain alert before falling into fraudsters’ traps.

Google’s spam identification feature, available in the Phone app, can identify calls coming from suspicious numbers and warn the user. On some supported devices and in some regions, the feature also offers the option to automatically filter or block potential spam calls. However, it is not necessary that every suspicious call will be disconnected automatically. The available features depend on the phone model, app version, region and user settings.

Google is also developing features that use artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology to identify potential scams. Some supported Android phones have the ability to detect fraud-related signals during a conversation and warn the user. The aim is to alert users in cases where someone tries to obtain personal information by posing as a bank official, government employee or representative of a trusted institution.

However, these features are not available equally on all phones and in all languages. Users should therefore check the security options available on their devices and apps. To activate spam protection on an Android phone, open the Google Phone app and look for the ‘Caller ID and spam’ option in Settings. Options related to identifying and filtering spam calls may be available there. The spam protection setting in the Google Messages app can also be checked. Keeping apps updated increases the chances of receiving new security features.

Caution remains essential despite technical safeguards, as no warning system can guarantee detection of every fraud attempt. Users should not share OTPs, banking passwords, UPI PINs or other sensitive information with unknown persons. If someone on a call asks for immediate money transfer or screen sharing, the information should first be verified through the official channels of the institution concerned. Google’s security features can help reduce the risk of spam and online fraud, but vigilance and good digital habits are equally important.
