CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: To ensure patient safety in hospitals, the central government has directed strict enforcement of the ban on reuse of single-use medical devices and disposable surgical material. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has asked all states and Union Territories to ensure compliance with the rules in government and private health institutions. The direction was issued through a letter dated October 16, 2026, details of which emerged between October 23 and 25.
Which devices are barred from reuse? According to the DGHS, complaints have surfaced that some private and corporate hospitals were sterilising devices meant for single use and reusing them on patients after use. These reportedly include cardiac catheters, guidewires, balloon catheters, some dialysis-related equipment, surgical staplers, laparoscopic trocars, syringes and needles.
Risk of infection and device failure: Health officials have warned that sterilisation alone cannot make a device designed for single use safe for reuse. Such a practice may increase the risk of infection, reduce the device’s functionality and cause complications during treatment. Reuse of contaminated needles or equipment can also raise the risk of infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C.
Instructions to states on monitoring and action: The DGHS has asked health departments, drug controllers and related authorities in states and Union Territories to increase inspection and monitoring of hospitals. If violations are found, appropriate action may be taken under applicable laws. Hospitals will have to use and dispose of devices strictly in accordance with the original manufacturer’s instructions.
Questions also raised over patient costs: The DGHS also expressed concern that, in some cases, the full cost of reused devices was charged to patients or reimbursed under government schemes. The directive is aimed at strengthening patient safety, infection control and accountability in health services.
