CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies:

Farmers and account holders expressed anger on Monday over the alleged embezzlement of crores of rupees linked to the Aichhar branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Greater Noida. A panchayat was held in front of the bank, demanding that the affected account holders get their money back and that action be taken against the guilty bank employees. Farmer leader Brijesh Bhati led the protest. Social workers also joined the affected account holders.

During the protest, farmers alleged that the bank management has so far returned money to only a few people, while the remaining account holders continue to face hardship. Farmer leaders said the festival season is approaching and families are facing financial distress because people’s savings are stuck. They demanded that all victims be given back their full money as soon as possible.

After the panchayat, the protesters also entered the bank and raised slogans. In view of the situation, a heavy police force was deployed at the spot. Farmer leaders warned that if the account holders do not get justice, they will go to Delhi and stage a dharna at the bank’s headquarters.

According to police, the money of 16 account holders has been returned so far. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the matter. The bank management has assured that the remaining account holders will also be given back the full amount with interest.
