CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: October is considered a good month for growing winter vegetables. During this period, the weather begins to turn cooler, making it possible to prepare a small kitchen garden on a home balcony, terrace or courtyard. A large garden is not required for this. With a few pots, good soil and regular care, fresh green vegetables can be grown at home. Notably, harvesting of some leafy vegetables can begin within just a few weeks.

1. Cauliflower – Cauliflower is a popular winter vegetable. It can be planted in a large pot with fertile soil mixed with manure. With adequate sunlight and proper care, the crop may take around 60 to 80 days to be ready. Do not allow water to collect in the pot.

2. Spinach – Spinach can be grown easily in limited space. Its seeds can be sown directly in a pot or grow bag. Under favourable conditions, its leaves may be ready for use in about 25 to 30 days.

3. Radish – Radish seeds are sown directly in the soil. Choose a pot that gives the root enough depth. Depending on the weather and variety, small radishes may be ready in about 35 to 40 days.

4. Fenugreek – Fenugreek is a useful green vegetable that grows in limited space. Its seeds can be sown in a wide pot or grow bag. With proper care, the leaves may be ready for cutting in about 20 to 25 days.

5. Bathua – Bathua is a nutritious leafy green preferred in winter. To grow it in a pot, keep the soil lightly moist and provide the plants with adequate light.

Take special care during rain

Give the plants sufficient light every day, but protect them from excess water during continuous rain. Keep the drainage holes in pots open and do not allow water to collect in the soil. Remember that the time taken for the crop to be ready may vary according to the weather, seed variety and care.
