CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Security forces in Chhattisgarh are continuing their intensified action against Naxals, with fresh reports of an encounter from Sukma district on Thursday. According to officials, heavy gunfire erupted between Naxals and a joint team of security personnel during a search operation in the forested areas.
The operation, launched early in the morning, was based on intelligence inputs about the presence of armed Maoist cadres. As the forces advanced into the dense forest zones of Sukma, they came under fire, triggering a fierce exchange that lasted for several hours. While the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, senior officials have indicated that security forces have managed to push the rebels back.
Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the encounter site, and combing operations are underway to ensure the area is secured. Sources within the police said that explosives and weapons may have been planted by the Maoists to hinder the security forces’ movement, a common tactic in the region.
Chhattisgarh, particularly districts like Sukma, Dantewada, and Bijapur, remains a hotbed of Left-Wing Extremist activity. Over the past few months, security forces have intensified anti-Naxal campaigns, resulting in significant recoveries of arms and the surrender of several Maoist cadres.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to dismantling Naxal networks in the state and restoring peace in affected regions. The latest Sukma encounter underscores the ongoing challenges and the high-risk environment in which security personnel operate to curb extremist violence.
