The controversy over live performances involving singer Daler Mehndi and Abhijeet Bhattacharya is intensifying. After Abhijeet’s remarks, Daler Mehndi’s son Gurdeep Mehndi has now openly defended his father. Expressing anger over Abhijeet’s statement, he said some artistes say anything to get a few views. Gurdeep claimed that his father was not lip-syncing at the Uttarakhand event, but was singing live.
What had Abhijeet Bhattacharya said?
The controversy began after a statement by Abhijeet at Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav 2026. Speaking from the stage, he had said that if an artiste is not actually singing at a live show, they should not be allowed to do so. Referring to the incident in Uttarakhand, he said the questions raised by the minister after coming on stage at the programme were correct. Abhijeet also said that whether he sings off-key or his voice sounds bad, he will always sing live. He did not directly name Daler Mehndi, but his remarks were seen as referring to the same controversy.
Gurdeep says he will send footage
During a live programme, Gurdeep said he had not expected such a comment from Abhijeet. He said his father had always taught him to sing live. Gurdeep also said he would send Abhijeet footage of that day’s performance so that he could see for himself whether Daler Mehndi was singing live or not. Appealing to Abhijeet to remain humble, he said every artiste goes through good and bad phases in life.
What was the Uttarakhand controversy?
In October 2026, during a programme at the Kunjapuri Devi fair in Uttarakhand, Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal stopped Daler Mehndi’s performance midway and questioned his singing and conduct. The minister accused him of lip-syncing and of coming on stage in an intoxicated condition. After this, Daler’s brother Mika Singh defended him, saying he was unwell at the time. Since the incident, a debate has continued among artistes over live singing and respect for performers on stage.
