Avantika Mahajanapada (modern-day Ujjain) has been the sacred land of dance and penance for Sage Bharata, the author of the Natyashastra. Sage Bharata had a profound natural connection with the region of Avanti in Madhya Pradesh. He made direct references to the scenic landscapes of Avanti in his treatise.
