CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Vehicular pollution is affecting both children’s health and their education in Gurugram. According to a study report released in October 2026 by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), pollution from road transport affected a total of 94,859 school days for children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 in 2025. This is equivalent to the full academic year of 431 children.
The study also estimated 89 new cases of asthma among children and adolescents due to pollution from vehicles – an average of nearly one new case every four days. Illness caused by pollution forces children to remain absent from school, affecting their classes and learning process.
According to the report, private cars are the largest contributor to road transport emissions in Gurugram. In 2025, the city had about 323 cars per 1,000 people. The study also found that within the Gurugram Municipal Corporation area, road transport accounted for around 6 percent of exposure to PM2.5 and 20 percent of exposure to nitrogen dioxide.
The study stressed measures such as promoting zero-emission school buses and electric vehicles to reduce pollution. According to the report, converting all vehicles registered in Gurugram to zero-emission vehicles could deliver nearly three-fourths of the potential health benefits for children. However, given the daily movement of vehicles into the city from Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Region, wider action is needed.
