CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi, October 10. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is currently at the centre of protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and several opposition organisations. The CJP has called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10, demanding his resignation. The main reason for the controversy is the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, over which opposition parties and protesters have raised serious questions.
Who is Gyanesh Kumar? Gyanesh Kumar is a 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Kerala cadre. He took charge as India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner on February 19, 2025. Before this, he held several important administrative posts, including Secretary in the Union Ministry of Cooperation. As Chief Election Commissioner, his responsibility is to ensure a free, fair and transparent election process in the country.
Why is the CJP seeking his resignation? The CJP and protesters allege that a large number of voters’ names have been deleted during the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls. They say accountability should be fixed for alleged irregularities in the process and that the Chief Election Commissioner should step down. The protesters are also demanding that the process be stopped and that matters related to the electoral rolls be reviewed.
What does the Election Commission say? The Election Commission says the purpose of the electoral roll revision is to identify duplicate and ineligible voter entries and make the voter list more accurate. The Commission has rejected allegations of irregularities in the voter list. As a result, differences remain between the Commission and the organisations staging protests over the issue.
Security has been tightened in Delhi in view of the proposed protest. Delhi Police had not granted permission for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Despite this, the CJP announced that it would continue the movement. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed in several parts of the capital, with barricading and traffic-related restrictions in place. Maintaining law and order during the protest is a key challenge for the administration.
