CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s administrative journey has been shaped by his education and more than three decades of government experience. Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Kerala cadre, completed his BTech in civil engineering from IIT Kanpur. He later studied Business Finance at ICFAI and Environmental Economics at Harvard University.
Before joining the IAS, he worked for about one year at the Housing and Urban Development Corporation in Delhi. After clearing the civil services examination in 1988, he began his administrative service in the Kerala cadre. In the early part of his career, he held several important responsibilities in the Kerala government, including serving as district collector of Ernakulam. He later served as municipal commissioner of the Kochi Municipal Corporation and managing director of the Kerala State Cooperative Bank.
In the central government, Gyanesh Kumar also handled responsibilities in several departments, including the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs. He held posts related to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh affairs. He subsequently worked as secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Ministry of Cooperation. After retiring from the IAS on January 31, 2024, he was appointed Election Commissioner in March 2024. On February 19, 2025, he took charge as India’s 26th Chief Election Commissioner. Gyanesh Kumar is also listed as Chief Election Commissioner in the current list of officials of the Election Commission of India.
