New Delhi. The political controversy over the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has intensified. Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal has said that Gyanesh Kumar’s departure from the post is now only a matter of time. He said the protest being carried out by the Congress against him is only the beginning and that the party will continue to raise the issue.
The Congress has raised questions over the functioning of the Election Commission and the special intensive revision of the voter list. The party staged protests in various parts of the country, demanding that Gyanesh Kumar be removed from office. Congress leaders have also demanded an independent review of the changes made to the voter list.
Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) had also issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The deadline ends on Saturday, 26 September. CJP founder Abhijit Deepke has said that if there is no resignation, the organisation will launch a nationwide protest from Mumbai from 2 October.
Against the backdrop of the controversy, reports have also emerged of differences within the Election Commission of India over decisions related to the voter list and the special intensive revision. According to the reports, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had registered objections to several decisions over the past 10 months. However, different political parties and stakeholders have made claims on these issues, and independent verification is being carried out at different levels.
