The party’s Central Election Committee approved his name on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. With this decision, a path may open for Puri to continue in the Upper House of Parliament.
The Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after the resignation of former Union minister L. Murugan. He had resigned from the Rajya Sabha in October. His term was scheduled to run until April 2030, but the resignation made a bypoll necessary. According to the Election Commission’s schedule, voting for the seat will be held on November 12, 2026. The last date for filing nominations is November 2, while nomination papers will be scrutinised on November 3. Candidates will be able to withdraw their names until November 5.
Hardeep Singh Puri is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh. His present term is due to end on November 25, 2026. Recently, the BJP had not included his name in the list of candidates announced for the Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh. Now, after being named as the candidate for the bypoll from Madhya Pradesh, the possibility remains that his parliamentary tenure may continue.
Hardeep Singh Puri is a former Indian Foreign Service officer and worked as a diplomat before entering politics. In the Union government, he holds charge of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Following the BJP’s announcement of his candidature, political parties will be watching the bypoll process and nominations.
Elected members of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly will vote in this Rajya Sabha bypoll. The final result will be known after counting on November 12.
