CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has resigned from the captaincy in all three formats. On October 6, 2026, she shared an emotional message on social media, announcing that she was stepping down as captain with immediate effect.
Harmanpreet said it was not an easy decision for her, as many years of memories, emotions and sacrifices were attached to the responsibility. She said she felt she had fulfilled her responsibility towards the team and now wanted to play cricket again for the love of the game, without the pressure of captaincy.
She made it clear that leaving the captaincy did not mean retirement from cricket. She will continue to play for the Indian team as a player.
Under Harmanpreet’s captaincy, India won its first Women’s ODI World Cup in November 2025. Recently, under her leadership, the Indian team also secured the T20 gold medal for the second consecutive time at the 2026 Asian Games.
Harmanpreet took over the captaincy of the T20 team in 2016, became the ODI captain in 2022 and was given charge of the captaincy across all three formats in 2023. After her resignation, discussions have begun over the new captain of the Indian women’s cricket team.
