CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Headache and dizziness may seem like common problems, but when both symptoms appear together, they should not be ignored. In many cases, the cause may be dehydration, low blood pressure, migraine or a problem related to the inner ear. However, in some situations, these symptoms may also point to a serious illness. To understand the correct cause, it is important to pay attention to how long the symptoms last, how severe they are and what other signs appear along with them.
Major causes of dizziness with headache
1. Migraine: In migraine, there may be severe or throbbing pain on one side of the head. It may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and loud sounds, and dizziness in some people. In some cases, dizziness may be felt even without a headache.
2. Fall in blood pressure: Blood pressure may drop when a person stands up suddenly after sitting or lying down. This can lead to light-headedness, darkening before the eyes and loss of balance.
3. Dehydration: Not drinking enough water, excessive sweating in hot weather or fluid loss due to vomiting and diarrhoea can cause dehydration. This may lead to headache, weakness and dizziness.
4. Anaemia: When haemoglobin levels are low, a person may experience fatigue, weakness, breathlessness and dizziness. Headache may also occur along with these symptoms.
5. Inner ear problem: The inner ear plays an important role in maintaining the body’s balance. If there is a disturbance in it, a person may feel as if surrounding objects are spinning. In some cases, symptoms such as ringing in the ear or difficulty hearing may also occur.
6. Low blood sugar: Especially among people taking diabetes medicines or insulin, low blood sugar may cause sweating, trembling, weakness and dizziness.
When is it necessary to be alert immediately? If a headache begins suddenly and is very severe, or if dizziness is accompanied by difficulty walking, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting or double vision, emergency medical help should be sought immediately. Fever and a stiff neck along with a severe headache may also be serious. In such symptoms, one should not attempt treatment at home or wait for the condition to improve on its own.
What to do for prevention? If dizziness occurs, sit or lie down immediately and rest until the symptoms reduce. Drink enough water, avoid standing up suddenly and do not drive when feeling dizzy. If headaches and dizziness occur repeatedly, persist for a long time or start without a clear reason, consult a doctor for examination. Remember, no disease can be diagnosed only on the basis of headache and dizziness. Depending on the need, the doctor may advise blood pressure, blood sugar, haemoglobin and other tests. Identifying the correct cause is the basis of appropriate treatment.
