Healthy pregnancy habits may improve chances of safe normal delivery

CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal:

Proper diet, regular physical activity and timely health check-ups during pregnancy are important for the health of both mother and child. These habits may help improve the chances of normal delivery. However, it is important to understand that no single diet or exercise can guarantee a normal delivery. The method of delivery is decided by the doctor based on the health condition of the mother and the baby.

A balanced and nutritious diet is the most important requirement during pregnancy. Meals should include green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, pulses, whole grains, milk and protein-rich foods. Iron, calcium and folic acid supplements should be taken as advised by the doctor. Drinking enough water is also necessary.

With the doctor’s permission, light daily walks, pregnancy yoga and safe exercises can be done. These help keep the body active and strengthen the muscles. However, in cases of high-risk pregnancy or any complication, it is necessary to seek expert advice before starting exercise.

Regular antenatal check-ups during pregnancy, monitoring weight and blood pressure, and timely detection of problems such as diabetes and anaemia are also important. Adequate sleep and rest should be taken, and efforts should be made to keep stress low. Smoking, alcohol and medicines taken without a doctor’s advice should be avoided.

At the time of delivery, it may be useful to seek information from a doctor or trained health worker about proper breathing techniques, body position and preparation for coping with pain. Family support and a positive environment also help prepare the pregnant woman mentally.

According to experts, these precautions can promote a healthy pregnancy, but they do not guarantee normal delivery. Depending on the baby’s position, the mother’s health and the circumstances during labour, a caesarean section may be needed. In such a situation, prioritising the safety of the mother and child is the most important consideration.
