Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain is lashing several parts of Odisha under the influence of a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. In view of the threat of floods and landslides, more than 8,000 people have been moved from vulnerable areas of the state to safer places.
According to officials, 8,082 people had been evacuated by Thursday afternoon and rescue operations were continuing. Several districts, including Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Nabarangpur, have been affected by the heavy rain. Incidents of waterlogging, landslides and uprooted trees have been reported from many places. The administration has stepped up special monitoring in low-lying areas.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Nabarangpur, while heavy to very heavy rain has been forecast in several other districts of Odisha. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea in view of the possibility of strong winds over the sea.
The impact of this weather system is also being seen in central and eastern India. Warnings of heavy to very heavy rain have been issued for several parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha on September 25.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the deep depression may gradually weaken into a low-pressure area. For now, the administration in Odisha and adjoining affected areas has kept relief and rescue teams on alert, and people have been urged to follow the warnings issued by the local administration and the weather department.
