CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to take a decision within four weeks on the growing number of e-rickshaws on Lucknow roads and the problem of traffic jams. The government will have to decide whether new registrations of e-rickshaws should be stopped in Lucknow and in other cities where their number has exceeded requirements.

A division bench of Justice Alok Mathur and Justice A.K. Chaudhary issued the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by advocate Suraj Singh Visen. The court was told that about 1.33 lakh e-rickshaws are operating in Lucknow, increasing pressure on the city’s traffic system. The court asked the government to consider the possibility of limiting new registrations under the Motor Vehicles Act.

The court clarified that the central government’s exemption in registration fees does not mean that the requirement of registration for operating e-rickshaws on roads has ended. The court also said that restrictions issued on May 12, 2022, on the operation of e-rickshaws on several roads in Lucknow are not being effectively followed. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been directed to strictly ensure compliance with the existing restrictions and examine the possibility of such restrictions in other areas as well. However, the court also said that where e-rickshaw movement is banned, alternative routes should be made available for passengers. The next hearing in the matter will be on December 9.
