CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A sudden tingling sensation in the teeth while drinking cold water, sipping hot tea or eating sweets is a problem many people face. This tooth sensitivity can also affect everyday eating and drinking. In many cases, it may be caused by weakening of the tooth’s upper protective layer, known as enamel, receding gums or tooth decay. Some simple home measures may provide temporary relief, but if the problem occurs repeatedly, it is important to get examined by a dentist.

Why does tooth sensitivity occur? When the outer layer of the teeth becomes weak or the gums recede, the inner part of the tooth can become more sensitive. This may cause pain or tingling when the teeth come into contact with cold, hot, sour or sweet foods and drinks. Brushing too hard, using a hard-bristled toothbrush, excessive consumption of acidic foods and cavities are also possible causes.

Home measures for sensitive teeth: Use toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. Regular use of toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth may help provide relief. It may take a few days or weeks for its effect to become noticeable. Use the toothpaste according to the instructions given on the pack.

Clean with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do not apply too much pressure while cleaning the teeth. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently. This can reduce the risk of damaging enamel and irritating the gums. Avoid very cold and very hot items. If cold drinks or hot food increase the tingling sensation, avoid very hot or very cold items for some time. Limit the intake of sour drinks and acidic foods. Instead of brushing immediately after consuming them, rinse the mouth with water and brush after some time. Rinse with lukewarm water. Rinsing with lukewarm water may provide a feeling of comfort in the mouth. However, this does not treat the root cause of tooth sensitivity. Do not use very hot water.

Maintain regular dental hygiene. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and also clean between the teeth. Regular dental care helps reduce the risk of decay. When is it necessary to see a dentist? If the tingling sensation persists, there is sharp pain in one tooth, the gums are swollen or there is difficulty while chewing, contact a dentist. If there is tooth decay, a crack in the tooth or gum disease, home measures alone are not enough. Avoid applying lemon, salt, baking soda or other strong substances directly to the teeth, as these can damage the enamel and gums.
