Hong Kong’s Department of Health has taken major action in a case involving the promotion and sale of an alleged unregistered “cancer-prevention vaccine”. The department carried out surprise inspections at seven premises on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon. The action was taken as part of an investigation into a case in which a medical centre is accused of allegedly promoting such a vaccine.
According to the report, the Hong Kong Pacific Asia Medical Centre was allegedly promoting a vaccine said to cost around HK$120,000. It was claimed that the vaccine could prevent more than 20 types of cancer. However, the Department of Health’s investigation is primarily aimed at examining the legality of the product and the claims linked to its promotion.
The Department of Health has inspected the related premises and begun examining available documents and activities. Promoting or selling any medical product without the required registration or regulatory approval can be a serious public health concern.
According to experts, before using any product linked to cancer prevention or treatment, it is essential to verify its regulatory approval, scientific evidence and medical advice. Using expensive treatments or vaccines solely on the basis of promotional or commercial claims can be risky.
The Hong Kong Department of Health’s investigation is expected to continue. The case will clarify what type of product it actually is, whether it had the required approvals, and whether the claims made about cancer prevention are scientifically proven.
