CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal  /  Raipur : A private hospital has been ordered to pay ₹16 lakh as compensation after the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission upheld a lower forum’s ruling that found the hospital guilty of negligence. The case revolved around the hospital’s contradictory statements regarding the treatment given to a patient, which eventually weakened its defense and confirmed lapses in care.

According to the commission’s order, the hospital provided different versions of events during the proceedings, raising doubts about the credibility of its claims. This inconsistency, combined with evidence of inadequate treatment, led the bench to conclude that there was clear negligence in handling the patient’s case.

The complainant had alleged that due to improper diagnosis and delayed medical response, the patient’s health condition worsened. The district consumer forum had earlier awarded compensation, which the hospital challenged. However, the state commission upheld the ruling, increasing pressure on healthcare institutions to maintain transparency and accountability in patient care.

Legal experts say this decision sets a strong precedent, reinforcing that medical negligence cannot be hidden under contradictory claims. It also emphasizes the responsibility of hospitals to maintain accurate medical records and truthful communication with patients and their families.

The order is being seen as another step in strengthening patients’ rights under the Consumer Protection Act, reminding hospitals that lapses in medical care and misleading defenses can come at a heavy financial and reputational cost.
