CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Aden. The conflict between the Houthis and pro-government forces in Yemen continues to intensify. On Wednesday morning, Houthi rebels fired two missiles targeting Aden International Airport. According to local security officials, there were no immediate reports of casualties in the attack. Security arrangements at the airport were increased after the strike.
According to Reuters, one missile landed near the airport runway, forcing a flight arriving from Cairo to be prevented from landing and diverted to Jeddah. Two other aircraft on the runway were also moved away in view of the potential threat. The incident affected air operations at Aden airport.
The attack came at a time when Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched the “Dawn of Yemen” military operation against the Houthis. Government forces are trying to advance in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and along Red Sea coastal areas. The Saudi-led coalition is providing air support to Yemeni government forces, and there are reports of more than 100 fighter jets being involved in the campaign.
The Houthis have also claimed to have targeted some airports and military bases in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition said it had intercepted a ballistic missile fired towards Riyadh. Meanwhile, amid reports of growing defence cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, questions are also being raised about how much the military role of these countries may expand in the regional conflict in the coming days. However, there has been no public confirmation so far of direct military deployment by Pakistan or Turkey in Yemen.
