It is often seen that dogs, cows, buffaloes and many wild animals drink water from sources that humans would avoid after seeing them. This raises the question: does the digestive system of animals easily process dirty water? Scientifically, it is not correct to say so. Contaminated water can also cause infection and disease in animals.

The human stomach contains hydrochloric acid, which helps digest food and destroy many types of bacteria. Mucus and other protective systems on the inner lining of the stomach protect the body from the acid. However, this system cannot eliminate all pathogens and toxic substances.

The food habits of some animals, the diversity of microorganisms present in their intestines, and biological adaptation over a long period to their natural environment may make them more tolerant of certain pathogens. But this does not mean their bodies make every type of contaminated water safe.

For humans, water contaminated with faecal matter is particularly risky. According to the World Health Organization, such water can spread diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio. Therefore, even if water appears clean, it is not considered safe to drink without treatment when its quality is doubtful.
