CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The use of blue-cut lenses has been rising rapidly in the name of protection from blue light emitted by mobile and computer screens. However, according to an expert, there is not enough scientific evidence to describe these lenses as highly beneficial for the eyes. Dr. Ikeda Lal, an ophthalmologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said there is no conclusive research proving that blue-cut lenses specifically reduce dryness, irritation, pain or screen-related fatigue in the eyes.
According to the expert, there is also no evidence that blue light from normal screens damages the retina. One major reason for eye fatigue after looking at screens for long periods may be reduced blinking. This lowers moisture on the surface of the eyes and may cause dryness or irritation. Looking continuously at a screen from the same distance and not taking adequate breaks can also increase strain on the eyes.
If spectacles are needed, wearing glasses with the correct prescription is more important. To reduce eye fatigue, the 20-20-20 rule can be followed – every 20 minutes, look at an object about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Take regular breaks and blink sufficiently while looking at screens. A Cochrane review also found limited evidence of a clear difference in eye fatigue between blue-light filtering lenses and regular lenses.
