CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: There is often a perception around preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Examination that studying for 10 to 16 hours every day is necessary to succeed. However, experts and successful candidates believe that the right strategy, consistency and revision matter more than the number of study hours. If a candidate studies with full concentration for about six hours a day, UPSC preparation can be managed well with better planning.
Preparation can begin with NCERT and basic books. After that, it is more effective to keep subject-wise standard books limited and revise them repeatedly. Dividing the daily six hours into different segments can be useful. For example, two hours can be set aside for the main subject, one and a half hours for current affairs and notes, one and a half hours for the optional subject, and one hour for MCQs and answer writing.
In UPSC preparation, reading alone is not enough. For Prelims, regular tests and analysis of wrong answers are necessary, while for Mains, answer-writing practice should be continued consistently. One day a week can be used to revise the entire week’s study.
The most important point is to build a stable routine according to one’s own capacity and target, instead of comparing study hours with other candidates. Six hours of quality study can be more effective than long but irregular study sessions.
