Discussion has intensified over the role of the Maurya, Kushwaha, Shakya and Saini communities in Uttar Pradesh politics. In several regions of the state, the presence of these communities has the potential to influence electoral equations. This social group is considered important for political parties because its votes in different Assembly constituencies can affect electoral contests.

Based on the 2001 Social Justice Committee report, the community’s share of the population is said to be about 6.69 percent. According to political analysis, voters from this group are in a position to influence election results in more than 100 Assembly seats in the state. These include several areas of Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Braj, Rohilkhand and western Uttar Pradesh.

In the 2022 Assembly election, 14 MLAs associated with this community were elected. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Babu Singh Kushwaha, Devesh Shakya and Neeraj Maurya became MPs on Samajwadi Party tickets. In the state government, Keshav Prasad Maurya is Deputy Chief Minister and Jaswant Singh Saini is a Minister of State.

This community has not been a permanent vote bank of any one political party. The BJP, SP and other parties are making efforts to secure its support in different regions. In this situation, ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, the community’s political participation, representation and voting trends have become important subjects of discussion.
