CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: When buying a laptop, how many hours the battery will last is a question almost every user has in mind. However, there is no fixed duration for how long a laptop will run after being fully charged once. Battery life depends on the model, battery capacity, processor, screen brightness, internet use and the work being done.

In general, modern laptops can run for several hours when used for light tasks such as reading documents, browsing the internet and routine office work. Some new energy-efficient laptops claim 14 to 20 hours or more in manufacturer testing. However, in real-world use, this duration may be lower or higher. According to Microsoft, battery life is significantly affected by device design, usage, network, settings and other conditions.

If video editing, gaming, heavy software or other power-intensive work is being done on the laptop, the battery can drain faster. Similarly, high screen brightness, continuous internet use or video playback, and keeping several applications open in the background can also reduce battery life.

To maintain battery health, Microsoft advises avoiding repeatedly draining lithium-ion batteries completely and, where possible, keeping them between about 20 and 80 percent. Excessive heat can also damage batteries more quickly, so using or charging a laptop in very high temperatures should be avoided.

If a new laptop is running for much less time than expected even during normal light work, or if the battery level is dropping suddenly and rapidly, the battery capacity and usage conditions should be checked. In Windows 11, a battery report can be generated to view detailed information related to the battery’s current capacity and usage.

Therefore, looking only at the number of hours is not enough when assessing a laptop battery. Actual battery life should always be compared with the testing stated by the manufacturer for the same model and with your real-world usage.
