CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Sounds around us are a normal part of life, but when these sounds become louder than necessary, they can seriously affect hearing ability and health. Loud music, traffic noise, industrial machinery and firecrackers can damage the ears. This raises the question: how loud a sound can human ears tolerate, and at what level does the risk begin to increase?
At how many decibels do ears get damaged? Sound intensity is measured in decibels (dB). Normal conversation is around 60 decibels, while noise on a busy road may be 80 to 90 decibels or more. Prolonged exposure to noise of 85 decibels or above increases the risk of damage to hearing ability. The level of damage depends on the intensity of the sound and the duration of exposure. Staying for a long time in sound of around 100 decibels can affect hearing. At the same time, sound in the range of 110 to 120 decibels can be harmful to the ears even over a short period. Extremely loud blasts or firecracker sounds can suddenly reduce hearing ability and damage the eardrum.
Can loud sound cause death? The most common serious risk from loud sound is damage to hearing ability. Extremely intense sound can cause pain, a ringing sensation in the ears, and temporary or permanent hearing loss. However, no single fixed decibel level can be considered a universal standard for human death. Extremely intense sound and pressure waves produced by explosions can cause physical injury depending on the circumstances, but the risk of death is not determined only by the decibel level of sound.
Ways to keep ears safe: Earplugs or earmuffs should be used to protect the ears in places with loud noise. Keep headphone volume low and take regular breaks between continuous listening. Moving away from loud noise and reducing the time spent exposed to it is also useful. If ringing in the ears continues after exposure to loud sound, hearing becomes reduced, or pain occurs, medical advice should be sought. If hearing ability suddenly decreases, it is necessary to seek medical help immediately.
