CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The correct body weight cannot be determined only by age or appearance. Body Mass Index, or BMI, is used to understand how a person’s weight compares with their height. For adults, BMI is calculated by taking weight in kilograms and height in metres, then dividing the weight by the square of the height.
According to health experts, for adults aged 20 years or above, a BMI below 18.5 is considered underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight and a BMI of 30 or above falls in the obesity category.
For example, if a person’s height is 5 feet 5 inches, or about 1.65 metres, their weight may be around 50 to 68 kilograms within the healthy BMI range. Similarly, for a person around 5 feet 8 inches tall, the weight corresponding to a healthy BMI may be around 55 to 74 kilograms. These are only estimated ranges, not an individual ideal weight.
However, BMI is not considered the final measure of health. Factors such as body muscle, fat distribution, waist size, age, physical activity and other health conditions are assessed separately. For instance, a person with more muscle may have a higher BMI, but that does not necessarily mean they are unhealthy. Therefore, before setting a target to lose or gain weight, it is better to seek personalised advice from a doctor or a qualified nutrition expert.
