CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: During Diwali, large numbers of people step out of their homes to shop in markets. At festival time, air pollution levels may also rise because of increased traffic, dust, smoke and firecrackers. Amid the excitement of shopping, it is important to take care of your health. Exposure to pollution can be reduced by following a few precautions.

Before leaving for shopping, check the Air Quality Index (AQI) in your area. If the pollution level is in the very poor or severe category, keep your time outdoors short and avoid unnecessary travel. If possible, choose a time when pollution levels are relatively lower, rather than early morning or late night.

When stepping out, wear a well-fitting N95 or equivalent mask. Cloth or ordinary surgical masks do not provide adequate protection from very fine pollution particles. Avoid crowded and high-traffic routes. Choosing a route with less traffic to reach the market can also help.

If you repeatedly feel irritation in the eyes, coughing or difficulty in breathing while shopping, immediately move to a clean and well-ventilated place. People with asthma or heart disease, the elderly and children should take special precautions. For such people, it is better to limit going outdoors when pollution is very high.

After returning home, wash your hands and face and change your clothes. Keep windows closed indoors when pollution outside is high. Diwali shopping is important, but with a little caution, health can also be protected along with the joy of the festival.
