CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress  /  ITDC News Bhopal / Mumbai   : The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of the rising health concerns linked to the growing pigeon population in Mumbai. In a strong move, the commission has sought a detailed report from the state Health Secretary and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) regarding preventive and corrective measures being taken to address the issue.

According to the commission, pigeon droppings are a major contributor to respiratory problems, including hypersensitivity pneumonitis, fungal infections, and other lung ailments — particularly affecting senior citizens and children. The panel cited increasing complaints from residents in high-density areas of Mumbai, where the bird population has surged over the past few years.

Notice and Directives Issued

The MSHRC has directed the Health Secretary and BMC Commissioner to file a report within four weeks outlining:

Steps taken to control the pigeon population.

Public awareness campaigns, if any.

Measures to clean pigeon droppings from public places.

Health advisories issued by the government or civic bodies.

Expert Opinions Raised

Health experts have long raised concerns about the unchecked feeding of pigeons in public areas such as parks, footpaths, and building terraces. These practices contribute to uncontrolled breeding and increase the risk of airborne diseases.

While animal lovers urge caution against harsh control methods, public health activists are calling for a regulated, scientific approach to strike a balance between animal care and public well-being.

The Commission’s intervention is expected to prompt swift action, ensuring that health and hygiene are not compromised in the name of tradition or sentiment.
