CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal: Hypertension is no longer considered limited only to older people. The risk of elevated blood pressure can also emerge around the age of 30. A matter of concern is that many people dealing with hypertension show no clear symptoms for a long time. According to the World Health Organization, regular blood pressure checks are the most reliable way to identify it. Government of India health programmes also emphasise screening people aged 30 years and above for non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Regular screening can help detect the disease at an early stage, allowing timely medical advice and lifestyle changes.

It is important to measure blood pressure correctly during screening. Rest for a few minutes before measurement, get tested while seated and use a validated device. If blood pressure is found to be high in one test, hypertension should not be confirmed on the basis of a single reading alone. Doctors may advise repeat checks on different days or blood pressure monitoring at home as required.

Regular physical activity, a balanced diet low in salt, adequate fruits and vegetables, keeping weight within a healthy range and staying away from tobacco can help keep blood pressure under control. The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week for adults. If blood pressure is repeatedly found to be elevated, consulting a doctor is essential. If very high blood pressure is accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe headache, blurred vision or confusion, immediate medical assistance should be sought.
