CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: ICMR Director General Inaugurates New Facilities at BMHRC

Visit Overview:

Secretary of the Department of Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Rajiv Bahl, visited the ICMR–Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC).

He first paid tribute and offered flowers at the memorial dedicated to the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and also participated in a tree-planting ceremony. Following this, he inspected the hospital campus and Health Centre No. 7.

During the visit, ICMR Additional Director General Sanghamitra Pati, BMHRC Acting Director Manisha Srivastava, senior doctors, and other officials were present.

Inauguration of Three Advanced Medical Facilities

During the visit, Dr. Bahl inaugurated three new advanced technologies at BMHRC:

NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing) Laboratory

This lab will be used to test all blood units at the blood center using NAAT technology, which can detect infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C at very early stages (window period), something not possible with traditional testing. This greatly reduces the risk of using infected blood. The facility is especially safe for patients requiring frequent transfusions, including those with thalassemia and cancer.

Body Plethysmography Machine

This machine measures lung capacity, obstruction, and function with high precision. It calculates the total air in the lungs after a deep inhalation and the residual air left after exhalation. This allows doctors to accurately assess lung health and plan more effective treatments.

Integrated Biochemistry & Immunoassay Analyzer

This machine rapidly performs hormone tests, cancer markers, infection indicators, and other biochemical tests, enabling faster treatment decisions in critical cases and reducing dependency on external laboratories.

Promoting Achievements & Research

During his visit, Dr. Bahl also released a documentary highlighting BMHRC’s 25-year journey and achievements. He engaged with doctors and researchers, stating that ICMR is committed to providing high-quality, advanced care to gas tragedy-affected patients. He emphasized that research should be given equal priority alongside treatment.

Dr. Bahl invited suggestions from faculty members to strengthen the institute’s scientific environment and assured that research activities would be accelerated in the future.

This visit highlighted BMHRC’s ongoing commitment to cutting-edge medical care and research, reinforcing its role as a leading healthcare and research institution in the region.
