CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Study Centre Inaugurated at Barkatullah University
A new IGNOU Study Centre was established by the Regional Centre, Bhopal, at Barkatullah University. The centre was inaugurated by Suresh Kumar Jain, Vice-Chancellor of Barkatullah University. The event was graced by Bharat Saran Singh, Chairman, Madhya Pradesh Private University Regulatory Commission; Swami Nityagyanaananda, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Bhopal; and Bini Toms, Senior Regional Director, IGNOU. The Study Centre Office was officially launched at the Department of Continuing Education on the university premises. Initially, the centre will offer 18 IGNOU courses, with provisions for future expansion based on demand.
Key Highlights:
Director Hemant Khandaai, Coordinator of the IGNOU Study Centre, welcomed the dignitaries and expressed delight over the centre’s establishment. He emphasized the significance of IGNOU courses in enhancing students’ knowledge and skills.
Bini Toms, Regional Director of IGNOU Bhopal, discussed the integration of Indian knowledge systems into the academic framework and highlighted key provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
She elaborated on IGNOU’s Indian Knowledge Tradition (IKT) courses, including Jyotish, Vastu, Bhagavad Gita Studies, Vedic Studies, Hindu Studies, Vedic Mathematics, Time Calculations, and Sanskrit Communication. Toms urged Vice-Chancellor Jain to encourage Barkatullah University students to enroll in these courses.
NEP 2020 and Academic Credit System:
Under the NEP 2020, students can earn up to 10% academic credits from other universities and integrate them into their primary course through the Academic Bank of Credit. IGNOU offers over 1,600 subjects through its Course-wise Registration and Certification Scheme (CRCS), allowing students to gain certification in Indian Knowledge Systems and related skills.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Suresh Kumar Jain highlighted the importance of Indian knowledge traditions through examples, encouraging students to integrate them into their lifestyles. He emphasized the need for research to bring Indian knowledge and culture to the global stage. The Vice-Chancellor also planted a Rudraksha tree to commemorate the inauguration of the IGNOU Study Centre.

The event was attended by Anshuman Upadhyay, Smriti Gargav, Subas Ranjan Nayak, Assistant Regional Director Ashesh Kumar, and other officials from the IGNOU Regional Centre.
