CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A fire broke out on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay campus in Powai, Mumbai, on Thursday night after a gas leak. Five people, including two children, were injured in the incident.
The incident took place around 10:25 pm at Hostel No. 6. According to officials, the fire was caused by a leak from the pipe of a gas cylinder.
The injured have been identified as 12-year-old Ansh Ahirwar, 9-year-old Tehzeeb Alam, 37-year-old Ishwar Singh, 34-year-old Shivkumar Singh and 23-year-old Anilkumar Yadav. All the injured were immediately taken to the BMC-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar for treatment.
Later, four of the injured were shifted to Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokli for further treatment, while one person remained admitted at Rajawadi Hospital.
Local police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staff reached the spot after receiving information and assisted in relief and rescue operations. According to doctors at the hospital, the condition of all five injured persons was reported to be stable.
After the incident, questions have been raised over the safety of gas cylinders and pipelines on the campus. Detailed information from officials on the causes of the incident is awaited.
