CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: IIT Bombay Drafts New Cheating Rules, Avoids Direct Disciplinary Action

Mumbai. IIT Bombay has begun preparations to change the process for dealing with cases of cheating or use of unfair means in examinations. The institute has prepared a draft of new rules, which proposes that instead of taking direct disciplinary action against a student, the student’s side should first be heard and the student should be given an opportunity to speak with a mentor. A final decision on the new rules will be taken after discussion in the institute’s Senate.

Under the proposed process, if suspected unfair activity comes to light during an examination, the matter will be placed before the relevant committee after action at the invigilator’s level. The new standard operating guidelines are expected to clarify what procedure the invigilator must follow at every stage and at what level the student’s statement will be heard. Along with teachers, student representation has also been included in the committee.

The move comes after the death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode on September 18. Wakode had been accused of using a mobile phone during an examination. The institute had said that no formal disciplinary action had been initiated against him. A police investigation into the case is also continuing. IIT Bombay’s existing rules provide for strict punishment for possessing or using a mobile phone or other unauthorised electronic devices during an examination. The institute is now reviewing the implementation of these rules so that, while maintaining discipline, students can also receive a fair process and an opportunity to present their side.
