New Delhi: Pakistan opener Imam-ul-Haq is currently caught in a major controversy. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has ordered an inquiry after questions were raised over the calf injury he sustained during the second Test against England at Lord’s. According to reports, Imam may seek legal advice to present his side before the inquiry committee.
Imam suffered an injury to the calf of his left leg while fielding during England’s first innings. The PCB initially described it as a low-grade calf strain. The board later said scans had confirmed the injury.
However, a controversy erupted after Imam did not come out to bat in either innings of the second Test. Around the same time, a video of him practising surfaced, after which some people, including former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, questioned the seriousness of his injury.
PCB to investigate injury
Pakistan Cricket Board selection committee member Aqib Javed has said the matter will be investigated. He described Imam’s failure to bat in both innings as a matter of concern and indicated that action could also follow after the inquiry.
Regarding the inquiry, a source told PTI that Imam may have to appear before the board’s inquiry committee and could seek legal advice for his defence. However, it is not yet clear whether he has formally appointed a lawyer.
Earlier allegations over injuries
Imam’s current difficulties have increased because former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim has also raised questions over earlier cases linked to his injuries. According to Wasim, former team physio Cliff Deacon had expressed concern during the 2022 England series over the pattern of Imam’s injuries.
In addition, a 2025 media report had claimed that a PCB committee had raised questions over Imam’s alleged injury during the New Zealand tour and had recommended strict action against him. However, a final conclusion on these earlier allegations and the current matter will emerge only after the inquiry.
After losing the first two Tests against England, major changes have also been made in the Pakistan team. Seven players, including Imam, have been dropped from the squad and sent home. The third and final Test is now scheduled to be played from September 9.
For now, the allegations against Imam-ul-Haq are only under investigation. Only after the PCB completes its inquiry will it become clear whether there was any rule violation over his injury and what impact it could have on his cricket career.
