CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Water Resources Minister Tulsiram Silawat has stated that the safety of dams, reservoirs, and associated structures is a high priority for the government. He instructed that all dams in the state that are over 25 years old should be surveyed, necessary work should be carried out wherever required, and their 100% safety must be ensured.
He specifically directed that the Kerwan Dam footbridge, which has been damaged, should be inspected and that the reconstruction work of the footbridge should commence immediately. Any negligence in the execution of the work will not be tolerated.

Minister Silawat inspected the Kerwan Dam. During the inspection, Chief Engineer Vinod Devda, Chief Engineer E&M B.S. Rawat, Chief Engineer Bhopal R.D. Ahirwar, and other departmental officials were present.

Following the inspection, Minister Silawat instructed that a detailed investigation into the cause of the damage should be conducted. The estimate for the repair work should be prepared within one week, the work should commence immediately, and the reconstruction should be completed within five months. All slabs and gates are to be rebuilt. The progress of the work must be reported every month.

The minister further directed that to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, the chief engineers of each basin should inspect the dams in their jurisdiction such that at least one district is inspected each week. The gates should be categorized into three groups based on their age, and replacements should be carried out in a phased manner as needed.
One span of the footbridge located on the left flank of Kerwan Dam had been damaged. The construction of the dam began in 1975 and was completed in 1980. The dam has a total of four slabs, which are equipped with eight automatic tilting gates.
