CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A two-day workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights in Healthcare” was inaugurated at AIIMS in collaboration with the Health and IPR, Copyright, and Technology Transfer Committee. The workshop was opened by AIIMS Bhopal’s Executive Director, Prof. Ajay Singh. Prof. Singh emphasized that innovation is a culture that cannot be forced upon anyone; it comes naturally as we engage in daily activities. He stressed the importance of documenting and publishing our work, which can then be shared with others, fostering further experiments and applications that drive innovation. He also highlighted the need to encourage students and residents to engage in innovative endeavors.

Dr. Babu Lal Soni provided details about the workshop, noting that it offers participants an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of intellectual property rights and how to patent innovations. During the workshop, Dr. Rehan-ul-Haq, Dean (Research), explained that patents prevent unauthorized copying, manufacturing, selling, or importing of knowledge derived from research, making them essential for protecting intellectual property and promoting future innovations. Dr. Kishan Kardam, former Senior Joint Controller of Patents and Designs and former Head of the Patent Office in Delhi, added that obtaining patents not only strengthens an institution’s global reputation but also establishes it as a leading research center.

Dr. Saikat Das, the nodal officer, discussed the purpose of Bani Health, a Bio-Incubation and Advanced Healthcare initiative established on December 20, 2023. Its main goal is to promote innovation and encourage students and residents to develop innovations that can improve patient care and treatment. Currently, under seven projects, devices are being developed to significantly enhance the ease of patient treatment.

The primary objective of this workshop is to increase understanding and utilization of intellectual property rights in the healthcare sector. The two-day event will feature interactive sessions, panel discussions, and case studies, reflecting AIIMS’ commitment to ensuring the proper use of intellectual property to improve healthcare services.
