Nagoya. Rain has made Afghanistan’s path to the quarter-finals easier in the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games 2026. Saturday’s match between Nepal and Japan could not be completed because of rain. Nepal, batting first, scored 149 runs in 15 overs, but rain stopped play before Japan’s innings could begin. The match was then declared no result. With this outcome, Nepal finished first in Group A and Afghanistan second.
Group A featured Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal. Afghanistan had defeated Japan in its opening match, while it suffered a defeat against Nepal. After the match involving Japan ended without a result, Afghanistan confirmed its place in the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final between India and Afghanistan will now be played on September 28 at Korogi Athletic Park in Nisshin, Japan. The match will start at 10 a.m. Indian Standard Time. India received direct entry into the quarter-finals in men’s cricket, while Afghanistan had to progress from the preliminary stage.
India are the defending gold medallists in men’s cricket at the Asian Games. In 2023 in Hangzhou, the final between India and Afghanistan could not be completed because of rain, and India were awarded the gold medal on the basis of a higher seeding. The two teams will now face each other once again in a knockout match.
