CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Why Team India avoided taking the Asia Cup trophy from Naqvi
The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka to win the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup title, but at the prize distribution ceremony it refused to receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The continuing political and diplomatic tension between India and Pakistan is being seen as the main reason behind the decision.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made it clear that the decision was taken under the policy of the Indian cricket board. He said the Indian team did not want to accept the trophy from Naqvi and that this stand had been decided in advance. According to a report, the BCCI had informed the ACC of its position before the tournament.
Team head coach Amol Muzumdar also supported the BCCI’s decision. He said the team stands fully with the decision and has no regrets about it.
This is not the first such instance. In the 2025 men’s Asia Cup too, the Indian team had refused to receive the trophy from Naqvi. At that time as well, the BCCI had objected to accepting an award from a Pakistani official playing a political role.
