CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Indian men’s team defeated England 2.5-1.5 in the seventh round of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad underway in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Wins by R Praggnanandhaa and world champion D Gukesh proved crucial for India. Both players won their respective games and added full points to the team’s tally.
Praggnanandhaa, playing with the white pieces, defeated Nikita Vitiugov. D Gukesh, playing with the black pieces, registered a win against Daniel Howard Fernandez. On the second board, Arjun Erigaisi drew his game against experienced Michael Adams. On the third board, Nihal Sarin suffered a defeat against Luke McShane.
India’s win came after a loss to host Uzbekistan in the sixth round. With the seventh-round victory, the Indian men’s team continued its effort to strengthen its position in the competition. The 46th Chess Olympiad is being held in Samarkand from September 16 to 27.
In the women’s section, India also defeated Germany 3.5-0.5. Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh and B Savitha Shri recorded wins, while Vaishali’s game ended in a draw. Savitha Shri registered her seventh consecutive victory.
