CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: New Delhi. Intensifying its protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Congress and the opposition INDIA bloc have planned to hold a “public impeachment” programme on October 30, 2026, at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in Delhi. The programme is proposed for 3:30 p.m. at 10 Rajaji Marg. Its objective is to publicly present the demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal from office and the opposition’s complaints related to the electoral process.

Venue changed after dispute over permission. The Congress initially wanted to hold the programme at the Ashoka Hotel. Preparations were then made to organise it at Ramlila Maidan, but Congress leaders alleged that they were stopped from making arrangements for the event there. Party general secretary K.C. Venugopal accused the central government of obstructing the opposition’s programme.

On the other hand, Delhi Police clarified that permission for the mega rally scheduled at Ramlila Maidan on November 1 has not been withdrawn. The no-objection certificate issued for the rally is subject to certain conditions and approval from the relevant land-owning authority.

Opposition questions on SIR and electoral transparency. The INDIA bloc has been raising questions against the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the electoral process. The opposition has raised demands including Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, a halt to SIR and restoration of voting through ballot papers. However, the response of the Election Commission and the central government to these allegations and demands will also be important.

Mega rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. After the October 30 programme, the INDIA bloc is preparing to hold a mega rally and march at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1 under the slogan “Save Vote, Save the Country”. The opposition says it will raise the issues of electoral transparency and voters’ rights at the national level.

Is this an actual impeachment? No. “Public impeachment” is a symbolic political programme of the opposition. It does not automatically remove the Chief Election Commissioner from office. For his removal, the formal process laid down in the Constitution and relevant laws must be followed.
