CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Scientists at the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, have installed India’s first indigenous Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) early warning system at a glacial lake in Uttarakhand. The system has been developed at an approximate cost of ₹61 lakh, significantly lower than the estimated ₹8 crore required for a comparable system. It is designed to provide up to two hours of advance warning, potentially helping authorities and communities prepare for dangerous flood events.
Glacial Lake Outburst Floods occur when water accumulated in a glacial lake is suddenly released, often following the failure or breach of a natural dam formed by ice, rocks and sediment. Such floods can travel rapidly downstream, damaging roads, bridges, buildings and other infrastructure while posing serious risks to people living in mountain regions.
Uttarakhand is particularly vulnerable to glacial hazards because of its mountainous terrain, glaciers and rivers originating in the Himalayas. An effective early warning mechanism can help reduce risks by alerting authorities and vulnerable communities before floodwaters reach downstream settlements.
The indigenous system represents an effort to develop cost-effective technology suited to India's Himalayan conditions. By reducing dependence on expensive imported systems, locally developed solutions could make disaster-monitoring technology more accessible and support the expansion of early warning networks to other vulnerable locations.
The system's potential benefit will depend on reliable monitoring, timely communication of alerts, regular maintenance and coordinated emergency-response arrangements. Although the technology is designed to offer up to two hours of advance warning, the actual warning time may vary according to local conditions and the nature of the event.
The installation marks an important step towards strengthening India's disaster preparedness in the Himalayan region. If successfully tested and expanded, indigenous GLOF warning technology could support faster evacuations, better emergency planning and improved protection for communities exposed to glacial flood risks.
