CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India has been awarded hosting rights for the UCI Road World Championships for the first time. The International Cycling Union has selected Pune in Maharashtra as the host city for the 2032 Road World Championships. The announcement was made during the UCI Congress held in Montreal, Canada, on September 23, 2026.
Pune’s bid succeeded against the Groningen and Drenthe region of the Netherlands. The UCI described both organisers’ bids as strong and awarded the Netherlands the hosting rights for the 2034 Road and Para-cycling Road World Championships.
In January 2026, Pune hosted India’s first UCI-recognised multi-stage road cycling competition, the Bajaj Pune Grand Tour. Around 170 cyclists took part in the four-stage event. The tournament was seen as important experience towards hosting an international-level competition.
The arrival of the Road Cycling World Championships in India is part of the event’s expansion in Asia. Japan hosted the competition in 1990, Qatar in 2016 and the United Arab Emirates is set to host it in 2028. With the 2032 event in Pune, India will become the fourth Asian host.
