CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India has demonstrated a 1,000-kilometre quantum communication network developed with indigenous technology, marking a significant achievement in the field of quantum technology.
New Delhi. Bengaluru-based startup QNu Labs is said to have played a role in developing the technology. Following this achievement, work is also under way on a plan to expand the network’s capacity to 2,000 kilometres.
The network uses quantum key distribution (QKD) technology for secure communication. QKD helps distribute keys used in encryption to keep information secure during communication. Based on quantum principles, the system can develop the ability to detect possible tampering, helping strengthen the security of sensitive communications.
Quantum communication can be useful for secure information exchange in sectors such as defence, banking, government communication and critical digital infrastructure. The development of indigenous technology gives India an opportunity to build domestic expertise and technical capability in this emerging field.
The plan to extend the network to 2,000 kilometres is the next step towards developing quantum communication systems on a larger scale in India. However, wider deployment will require work on challenges such as technical reliability, network integration, cost and practical use. The achievement underlines the potential to advance research and innovation in India’s quantum technology sector.
