CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: The Indian government has decided to send a high-level delegation to represent the country at the funeral ceremonies of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. According to Iranian sources, Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain and Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will attend the ceremonies on behalf of India. The move reflects New Delhi's diplomatic engagement with Iran and its respect for the country's leadership during a significant period of national mourning.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had reportedly extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral. However, India has chosen to be represented by the two senior officials. The funeral ceremonies are scheduled to take place from July 4 to July 9 across multiple Iranian cities. Khamenei's body will lie in state in Tehran before a state funeral procession, with the final burial planned in Mashhad, his birthplace. Millions of mourners and several international dignitaries are expected to participate.

India's participation underscores the importance of its longstanding diplomatic ties with Iran and its continued engagement with key partners in West Asia during a period of regional transition.
