CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A dispute has emerged over a signboard ahead of the inauguration of a newly built bridge on the India-Nepal border. The motorable bridge, built over the Kali river at Chharchhum in Dharchula tehsil of Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district, is considered important for improving movement and connectivity between the two countries. An objection has been raised from the Nepal side over the place name written on the welcome board of the bridge, which has been completed at a cost of about Rs 33 crore.
The matter is not limited to a board alone, but also brings to the fore sensitive issues linked to the India-Nepal border. Border-related differences already exist between the two countries in several areas. In such a situation, even a small issue concerning the name and geographical identity associated with a construction project on the shared border can take on diplomatic sensitivity. Several projects are under way to improve border infrastructure and trade connectivity between India and Nepal. Recently, the Government of India also approved an agreement for the construction of a new bridge over the Mechi river.
