CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: During a discussion on the situation in West Asia at the United Nations Security Council, India described attacks on commercial vessels and Indian sailors as a matter of serious concern. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, expressed concern over the rising violence in the region and called for immediate de-escalation and the resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy. He said West Asia’s security and stability are extremely important for India because the region is deeply linked to India’s trade and energy supplies.
Emphasising the safety of Indian ships and sailors, the ambassador said recent incidents in which several commercial vessels were targeted were worrying. These include incidents involving the Indian-flagged vessel MV DP World Kaveri, as well as MT Petro Dolphin and MT Valthera. He said Indian sailors were also present on these vessels and their safety is a priority for the Government of India. India made it clear that targeting commercial vessels and civilian sailors is unacceptable. Freedom of navigation in international waterways and the safe and unhindered operation of maritime trade must be ensured. For this, respect for international law is essential.
India also strongly condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, including airports, in Saudi Arabia. The ambassador said lives had been lost in these attacks, including Indian citizen Mohammed Yusuf Ali, who was killed in Riyadh. India expressed full solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia in protecting the country’s sovereignty. India said attacks on civilian targets undermine regional security and stability. Such attacks increase the threat to ordinary people’s lives and can further aggravate an already tense situation.
India urged all concerned parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate immediately and seek solutions through dialogue. According to India, ending military confrontation and ensuring the protection of civilians are necessary for establishing long-term peace in West Asia. India also described the security of maritime routes as important for global trade and energy supplies. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and other key maritime routes could affect international trade, oil supplies and the economy. India reiterated that attacks on commercial vessels, sailors and civilian infrastructure must stop. Dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law are necessary for lasting peace in the region.
